The Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA) will host the Oshwal Open Championship at the Oshwal Centre, Nairobi this weekend with an aim of selecting players ahead of the final Olympics qualification tournament in Doha, Qatar later in the month of May.

The event will see players taking part in different categories including the men's and ladies singles and doubles with best point earners likely to land a slot in the Kenyan team. Kenya’s tennis head coach is expected to attend the weekend event with an aim of evaluating the players’ growth.

According to Olympics table tennis Team Manager Samson Ateka, the event brings together top players from across the country."We expect a good tournament and a good turnout too considering that players will be fighting for slots," said Ateka.

At the same time, the Team Manager clarified that the points which have been accrued since April last year have been carried forward to April this year.

Among players expected to take part in the weekend tournament include the bulk of players who represented the country at the All Africa Games in Maputo last year. They include Anthony Mathenge of Nairobi Posta, Derrick Inyanje from Kisumu, Seja Chandarana in Nairobi, Gloria Sigowo from Strathmore University, Pascal Mutinda and Valencia Cheptoo.

The next tournament on calendar is Kisumu Open slated for March 30-April 1.
