Updated on 22/02/12  |    By JOHN MUNENE

KPL newcomers Muhoroni Youth got the better of Gor Mahia when they beat them 1-0 in a lively match played under a floodlit Nyayo Stadium on Wednesday evening.Geoffrey Simiyu’s 76th minute strike could have been cancelled by Collins Okoth in an extra time penalty but the latter blasted the spot kick wide.

Gor Mahia started the match the better side and dominated possession for the better part of the first quarter. During the early exchanges Tony Nyangor  sent a long cross but the ball was too high for Baldin Ngwa to connect.

In the fifth minute Kevin Ochieng sent a lovely cross but Nyangor’s header went wide. A minute later Nyangor was ruled offside.

Muhoroni Youth keeper Joseph  Gathongo came in handy to save his side from conceding the first goal in the 20th minute. He blocked  a strong shot  with the follow-up header by Baldin Ngwa missing by a whisker.

In minute 22, Gor Mahia’s Ali Abondo  controlled the ball well but his final shot found the side of the net.

A relaxed Ivo Mapunda comfortably saved Muhoroni’s corner in the 27th minute.

Gor Mahia followed with a counter attack but man-of-the-match keeper Gathongo  saved Dan Makori’s shot.

Muhoroni Youth’s first real chance was through a well taken free-kick that David Oriki  headed wide.

Minutes later another  well taken  free kick by Goeffrey  Simiyu  was spilt by Ivo Mapunda but defender  Musa Mohammed  cleared the rebound shot on the line.

The teams went to the break tied at 0-0.

Dan Makori had the best chance after the interval when he  headed  Baldin Ngwa’s flick but again the keeper Gathongo  stood firm to deny him.

Muhoroni Youth had another close chance but Dan Oriki couldn’t beat keeper Mapunda on a one-on-one situation. Faraji Omondi’s follow-up shot soared above the posts.

Yusuf Juma who had come in for Kevin Ochieng almost forced an own goal but luckily the misplaced clearance by Muhoroni Youth defender went out for a non-resultant corner.

In minute 64th   Muhoroni defender Caleb Waka cleared a goal bound shot on the line to keep his side in the game.

To sharpen his striking force Coach Anaba Awaono introduced Moses Odhiambo for the hard working Tony Nyangor.

Twenty minutes to the end Dan Makori chested Moses Odhiambo’s cross into the net but the assistant referee ruled him offside.

In the 76th minute Muhoroni launched a quick counter attack. Gregory Nyapala set up  Geoffrey Simiyu who run with the  ball and calmly  slotted it past an advancing Ivo Mapunda for the only goal of the match.

Gor Mahia had more opportunities to find an equalizer but misplaced their shots as frustration got the better of them.

A handball after a goal mouth melee gave Gor Mahia a lifeline in the extra minutes but Collins  “Gatusso” Okoth blasted the spot kick wide.

This was  Gor Mahia’s second successive loss  after they were also beaten 3-0 on Saturday by Ferraviaro Maputo in the CAF confederations cup.
